Engagement is the level of emotional connection a person has with an organization, its priorities and its people. The anatomy of engagement has three components.
Hands: physical needs (e.g., compensation, benefits)
Head: logical needs (e.g., career path, long-term incentive)
Heart: emotional connection to the work and the people
The hands and head are important, but don’t produce engagement. Winning the heart produces high commitment, loyalty, enthusiasm and high performance.
For any team to be fully engaged, each person must be emotionally connected to the work and to each other.
Consider your approach to engaging your team. Do you tend to focus more on the hands, head or heart? What is one way you can foster emotional connection to the work and to each other this week?
